Funding Anti-Hate or Hate?
Global News reported in June 2020 over 6,600 right-wing extremist social media channels in Canada exist according to a study from Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) in the United Kingdom. See Page 5 of report. The study failed to include all extremist groups from both sides of the spectrum in Canada.
In October 2020, Minster Bardish Chagger made an announcement that the Government of Canada was providing $15 million dollars for 85 anti-racism projects across the country, which would address barriers to employment, justice, and social participation among Indigenous People, racialized communities, religious minorities while tackling online hate, and monitor extremist groups.
The Anti-Racism Action Program received a total of 1,100 applications in late 2019. It was said that "Around 80 projects will likely involve Black and Indigenous communities."
Since 2018, the government has funded 663 events, 261 projects, and 77 organizations through CSMARI.
The Canadian Anti-Hate Network was also awarded $268,400 to hire four people to help monitor extreme groups and report on their activities.
According to Evan Balgord and Peter Smith's article from the Canadian Anti-Hate Network suggested that Canada is saturated with hate groups and it's become a nationwide problem totalling an astounding 300 Hate Groups. Where does this number come from? No one really knows and the article by the experts does not even list the groups out of the 300 they claim exist. Like many other Canadians, we were shocked to learn of these 300 hate groups and were intrigued by these astounding allegations? This is why CyberHate Canada was created.
